Why do we think that consuming alcohol is something cool that you should be a part of? Did you know that 4,186 deaths were recorded in Australia in 2017 in which alcohol was said to be the major cause? There were deaths due to injuries (suicide, accident, fall, etc.) and alcohol was a major contributor to that.

Alcohol Use Disorder

Alcohol Use Disorder, or more commonly known as Alcoholism, is a CHRONIC DISEASE in which the person displays uncontrolled drinking. The Australian Bureau of Statistics was the first organisation in Australia to look for signs of drinking patterns in the Australian population. Even in 1997, when they conducted their first survey, the people falling in the age group of 18 to 24 were most likely to abuse alcohol. And we have come a long way from 1997. After 22 years, we have not reduced but increased the alcohol consumption.

The Epidemic of “Party Culture”

The so called “party life” stereotype prevailing among the students at the Australian universities is a concern. But we often overlook it. I know you must be thinking “Who are you to tell us that we should drink or not.” But understand that alcohol is becoming an integral part of life in Australia. Whether it is a celebration of an event or any other type of social activity, alcohol is a contributor. “Getting drunk” is a common culture among the university students. This has led to one in five hospitalisations of people under 25 to be alcohol related. In 2016-17, the total consumption of alcohol in Australia was around 186 million litres of pure alcohol. This means that every person aged 15 or above had 9.4 litres of alcohol to drink (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2018).

The Trend of “Unemployed Alcoholic”

The students are meant to party hard. This mantra is going on around the students through various social media platforms. When Orkut was used, the people used this mantra there. Then came in Facebook. Then WhatsApp. Instagram. Snapchat. Tumblr. There is no end. I feel you, I really do. But why do students drink? Most of them drink because they want to feel a part of the community. They drink because they want to fit and be liked. And why is this increasing? Because we often dismiss it as “cool teen nature” and do not look over the consequences. This glorification has done nothing but develops a bad habit among the students.

The Dark Side of the Moon

That which looks all great and appealing from the outside has actually darker secrets. The students are attracted to the glowing culture beaming with blonde haired girls and flying champagne. The peer pressure and the need for social acceptance has made many students dependent on alcohol. But why are you justifying it with “I am young”? Your liver doesn’t care if you are an 18 year old bloke or a 17 year old darling. And if you think “No, I am not an alcoholic. I am just a young lovely woman or young handsome man who is enjoying university life and parties.”, check out these warning signs of alcoholism -

  1. Do you drink alone or secretly?
  2. Do you still enjoy the activities that were your hobbies a few months ago?
  3. Do you feel “Damn, it has been so many days since I had a drink. I should get a beer.”?
  4. Do you often go out to have a drink choosing it over other activities?
  5. Do you feel anxious or sick when you try to avoid alcohol?
  6. Do you get irritated easily and have constant mood swings?
  7. Do you feel guilty after drinking?
  8. Do you feel that you should have a drink in the morning when you wake up?
  9. Do you consume alcohol neglecting your health and finances?

No, do not blame drinking alone on the fact that none of your friends was interested. And don’t you dare say that you have changed and your interests have changed and that is why you do not enjoy those activities any longer. Not always is your irritation or mood swings due to PMS or homesickness.

Drinking Socially vs Drinking Necessarily

It is always cool to have a drink or two with your friends and blow off some steam. It is okay when you are hanging out with your mates and think that a pint of beer will add to the fun. There is nothing wrong in that, I agree. But there is wrong when you indulge in binge drinking like this. If alcohol finds its way on your table every time you are hanging out with your friends, you need to stop. And that time too when you have a drink during the day when you are still not able to shake the hangover from last night. If you are binge drinking 3 days of a week, you are more likely to perform poorly..... in a test than those who drink less but 6 days a week and also miss classes.

Social Media Is “Not Cool”

Facebook posts like “Student is the only time when you can be an unemployed alcoholic and your parents would still be proud.”, “Why drink coffee when you can have Kahlúa?” are doing nothing but normalising the seriousness of this issue. No, you do not. The spreading epidemic of the stereotype of party culture is making this illness trendy. The students feel proud when they are commented on the change in personality. “Oh, I have become such an alcoholic.” followed by laughter and appreciation is not something to be proud of. Rethink the next time you hold a pint of beer or a glass of whiskey. And if you see your reflection already, get help.
