The University of California — Los Angeles (UCLA) is a public research university located in the Westwood district of Los Angeles. The school enjoys a widespread reputation as one of the best universities in the nation based on its academics, value, and selectivity. In 2012, UCLA ranked 13th among national universities and 31st among global universities. The university has a reputation for producing scholars and Nobel laureates but has also been at the forefront of research in more applied sciences such as public health and engineering.
The university is a member of a group of research-intensive Universities of California. The acceptance rate for Fall 2016 was 18%.
UCLA is a selective university. In 2016, the school admitted around 10 percent of applicants who enrolled as freshmen. To be considered for admission to UCLA, students are required to submit an application that includes SAT or ACT scores and high school transcripts. Applicants may also participate in the University of California systemwide application service (the latter is particularly recommended for international/out-of-state students). Letters of recommendation are not required but are assessed if included with an application.
As part of its commitment to serving California and beyond, UCLA has a "Global Admission Program" that enables undergraduate applicants to apply from high schools outside the United States. Under this program, qualified applicants receive enhanced admission consideration for their academic achievements, leadership potential, and community service.
In addition to its undergraduate college program, UCLA has 10 professional schools that enroll more than 23,000 students: dentistry, education, engineering, fine arts, health sciences, law, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, and the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. The school also has a graduate division with 19 professional schools and various programs and institutes. Many Science classes are highly impacted. The school offers an average of 4 years, but most major as many courses as you can to graduate early. It is better to study math in the summer for math if possible. Take AP tests whenever possible instead of college courses.
UCLA is the largest campus in the California state university system and among the ten best. Admissions are highly selective, with the UCLA acceptance rate down again this year to an all-time low of 18%. This represents a record 8% drop from last year's 22% acceptance rate. At this rate, UCLA will ultimately lower the bar for admission in two short years.
Good grades in challenging courses such as Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) classes can benefit an applicant and involvement in extracurricular activities and community service. The school has partnerships with schools all over the world where students can enhance their applications by completing an internship or taking classes at UCLA while still attending high school. Regularly visiting the campus and engaging with faculty and staff will give applicants a better understanding of what it's like to be a student at UCLA, but trips may also help them make more informed choices about which colleges will work best for them beyond California if they are. Being able to show this interest and understanding will help them to stand out from other applicants.
Most important of all is for students to be able to demonstrate that they have a real passion and commitment to pursuing their interests, whatever they may be – the more specific and well-defined those interests are, the better chance an applicant has of being admitted.
Finally, taking care of every aspect of the application process can make a difference; this means carefully proofreading applications and personal statements before submitting them and following up on any questions or problems encountered in the process as soon as possible.
UCLA is a competitive school; students who have an early grasp of their interests and abilities and a clear idea of what they would like to do with those interests in the future are among the most likely to be admitted.
