A Report on Social Work And Cultural Issues

This report discusses the social and cultural issues in the social work responseduring the Boxing day Tsunami in Indonesia (2004). The two main issues considered are Social and Cultural issues.

CULTURAL ISSUES

Language

Language is the most convenient mode of communication. It plays an important role when we work with culturally diverse people. For instance During the Boxing Day Tsunami, information was conveyed in a language which can be easily understood by the native peoples and provide information by using visual techniques like videos and images.

Religion

Religious practice can have a huge impact on the value and belief system. It was important to consult others who are of the same religion to have a better understanding.

Age

As a social worker, we must plan rescue strategies for aged people and children. Additionally, the two things that have been considered during the Tsunami in Indonesia were the specific needs of young people and elderly people and cultural views on the social significance of youth or age.

Disability

Additionally, you are required to consider diverse social perspectives on inabilities and putting the individual before the disability. At last, it can be said that focus on the individual, not the handicap.

Gender Preferences

Being a social worker, one should be aware of the cultural groups that have the same views on the opposite sex providing services to a person. For example - a single woman may feel uncomfortable working with a male in an office, or women may be uncomfortable with being helped by a man in situations like Tsunami Indonesia (2004).

Destruction

Indonesia was the first country destructed by the earthquake and tsunami that occurred in the year 2004. According to the country National Disaster Relief Coordination Agency, more than 250,000 people were dead whereas more than 37,000 were missing. The Boxing Day Tsunami disrupted social life, damaged the social order, infrastructure, and property.

Oppression of the most oppressed

Enhance the safety strategies of the most oppressed people like women, children, aged, and disables.

The emergence of Hidden Issues

Issues like racism inequalities and signs of ethnicity were the few issues within the society that were emerged during the destruction caused by Tsunami.

Suicidal Tendencies

There were injuries, Trauma-prolonged anxiety, and stress among people which created suicidal tendencies within the community of Indonesia.

How to Address Social Issues

Trauma can be controlled by the experiences of the victim. They need to discuss the experiences so that a better contribution can be made in recovery and relief processes.
Look for informal care system, for example, friends, neighbors, etc.
Make sure the safety of women, aged, and children by sexual violence and abuse within the community.
Extra care and safety for people with disabilities, old people, and most oppressed.
Get in touch with the Real Estate Authority of Indonesia to get rid of confusion related to the property rights of the victims.
