Portfolio Explanation

My portfolio has been designed to allow people to be a first look based on my knowledge, my nursing skill, my journey to become a nurse, and to collect more comprehensive sight of myself dependent on provided in-depth information, documentation, and artifacts. All of this assist as supplement to my resume and reflects my professional development through my career as the registered nurse as well as even the barriers I experienced before nursing. My portfolio will continue to grow with me as I grow up as a nurse. As computer has eliminate the professional and personal interaction at the time of the application process as well as has nearly made the spiral-bound portfolio files obsolete at the time of the interview process, portfolio is becoming more popular for offering back some personal interaction to allow managers and other healthcare members make a chance to actually get to recognize me, not only the professional, I represented only be typed resume had only words on paper.

Finally, I would like to share all the negative and positive experiences I had during my career as a registered nurse. Additionally, I would like to give support as well as some inspiration and hope to help people who have difficult time, as we are all determined to the main goal and people in general, nursing can be very overwhelming and stressful, however, it provides those instances which are very rewarding. It is something I will never forget, far more valuable than the irresistible side; For example, to get a special thank you from a family member to provide care and doing my job as a registered nurse, it is a real reward that makes all of stress and hardship valuable.

Practice Context

I have gained many valuable skills when working in different healthcare systems. I have obtained a lot of experience when working as an independent nurse contractor where I have done on-site health screening for private agencies. However, I have obtained the most experience when working at Beaumont Health Care, formerly recognized as Oakwood Health Care System. Also, I expected the role of a responsible nurse on a rotational basis more than a few times and have been very engaged with different unit councils and committees. I am regular and flexible in the hospital in several units, for example, Traumatic Brain Injury, IMC Telemetry, Rehab, and its Ortho Bone and Joint unit. At all times, I am eager to take extra shifts and choose to work overtime if necessary.

Although I had no doubt that I would become a professional health practitioner, my career and professional life have been sharpened greatly by the lessons I learned in the (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) BSN program. I have gradually evolved into a competent, professional nurse, breaming full of confidence. Each lesson that I attended was meaningful as it equipped me with the necessary skills and knowledge. The BSN program molded me to an all-round nurse, with unshaken work ethics and moral values. I am confident that the lessons I learned in the BSN program has made me one of the best nurses in the land, and I am ready to take on challenges that will be presented along with my duty. Every minute I spent studying strengthen my ability and expanded my thinking capacity. I now feel very confident when I integrate with other health workers at my working place. In this document, I will present myself and my ability, both as a student and as a working professional nurse in the Medical-Surgical Unit in one of the leading hospitals. This portfolio will also showcase my strength and my desire and passion to work towards my career and personal goals.

I am a superuser for the EPIC Charting System and be present in regular meetings to stay up-to-date with all the information. I desire to continue progress in my profession not only to benefit my occupation but also to offer more patient-centered care and better bedside care for all patients. I am seeking new approaches to get involved and gain more experience at all times.

Standards of Practice or Competency Standard

Nurses are accountable and responsible to the standards for practice that developed by NMBA. In this way, Standard 4 of the Registered nurse standards for practice is broadly conducting assessment. The sub-section 4.2 of Standard four highlighted that nurses should use a variety of assessment procedures for collecting appropriate and accurate information and data to inform these practices on a regular basis. Conducting a detailed health assessment helps nurses identify additional psycho-social problems that may be involved, in order to combat recognized conditions. Furthermore, it will help nurses to implement nursing interventions in a timely manner to prevent further harm. In this scenario, the patient who can take care of the patient is a graduate nurse. Although patients have experienced more severe asthma, nurses are not doing an overall assessment of what nursing is all about. Thus, her deterioration was not noticed in time and intervention could not be executed in time. As a result, nurses continue to get worse as they fail to meet the four standards developed by the NMBA (Cashin et al. 2017).

Nurses have a legal and ethical responsibility to protect the privacy of the patient. Nurses must maintain the standards of ethical professional conduct. In addition, the first principal of International Council of Nurses (ICN) is a nurse and patient. Under the principal, it has stated that nurse holds in confidence personal information and use judgments to share this information. Patients have a right to privacy. Nurses must respect and honor the individual’s right to privacy and confidentiality by accepting consent before providing information to anyone. In this context, the nurse shared information about the condition of patient with their neighbors without her consent. As a result, it shows that nurse does not use prudence when sharing health information to the neighbor. Consequently, sharing patient health information without their permission to their neighbor is an ethical issue that can be seen in the setting. The nurse failed to comply with the ethical professional standards set by the ICN. Moreover, nurses violate the Code of Ethics developed by the NMBA (Halcomb et al. 2016).

Nurses should help patients have as much strength and individuality as possible in recognizing the needs of patient for their decisions and independence. If there is a conflict of interest, the nurse should discuss the conflict with the patient to the best of her ability. Both of these nurses need to work positively with other patient health team members to participate in health decision making and evaluation. Nurses are also obliged to maintain appropriate patient boundaries. Nurses must ensure that information about patients is not distributed to other individuals or parties in violation of HIPPA or other privacy laws (Ossenberg et al. 2020). Moreover, as a registered nurse, I must maintain patient information and records as well as have to prevent unnecessary patient access. If a patient wants to take part in a medical study, the nurse should provide the patient with complete information and know what they are studying. Nurses with leadership roles should review all staff licensing requirements for staffs and ensure that subordinate nurses are keeping their licenses for nursing practice. Nurses have a responsibility to report unethical or illegal behavior by members of the health team. In case, a nurse suspects an impairment by a healthcare provider, she should report this information to the appropriate authority (Fisher et al. 2016).
