The report throws light on the match-fixing event that took place in Polo ground in America. It describes the murky incident of National football league which raised several questions on how and why the players throw the entire game in the opponent team hands. It focuses on relevant issues like the payment, irresponsibility of monitoring the match-fixing activities, shutting down the game in case of fixing rumours and so on. It even emphasizes who the player's character must be mould towards nationalism so that they do not take part in the illegal practices. At last, it discusses why it is a criminal offence and how a small mistake destroys the entire career of the sports players.

Case Description of NFL Match-Fixing Case Study

One of the biggest concern of the NFL is mix fixing. There are various incidents when gamblers are found to be fixing the match to earn money. A bribery scandal took place in the 14th Annual Championship game. The game was played on 15th December 1946 at Polo ground in the New York City. Around 58,400 spectators came from different places to witness the popular match. The game was about to be played between eastern and western division champions that is between New York Giants and Chicago barriers. It was a day before the champions leagues players were accused of taking bribes from the opponent time. Frank Filhcock and Merle Hapes were found to be taking the bribe from Alvin Paris. Through investigation, it was found that two of the players were found to be guilty. Since it was an international event, therefore, a police investigation was done to find out the victims.

The mayor along with some of his executives interviewed the players one by one. In hours of interrogation, Hapes admitted that he was offered a bribe by Avan Paris to fix the match. On the other hand, Filhcock stated that he was not offered any bribe from any person to date (Ellfeldt, 2019). Paris wanted Chicago barriers to win NFL champion league for the eight times. Since Hapes took he bribe from Paris he was suspended to play for his country, on the other hand, Filhcock was given to further play with the team as he was not found guilty. But later in the trails, Filhcock admitted that he also took the bribe offered to him by Paris under the Oath. Paris wanted to change the outcome of the game and he tried by bribing Filcock and Hapes. Paris was sentenced for a year which he served for nine months before his parole.

Relevant Integrity Issues

It is generally assumed that fixing a big sporting event is almost possible despite this perception Paris was found to be successful in bribing the players of New York Giants. Match-fixing did under this case after the analysis was found to be under the category of gambling issues. The match was fixed by Paris to secure their place by the remaining top in the league. The above-mentioned example is the one in which the ethos of the pursuit of the victory and of performing best was breached by the opposite team member. In such a situation, it is found that the team members who take the bribe deliberately chose to put fewer efforts to win the game or else try to lose it (Huggins, 2018). The gamblers tried to fix the game so that they can earn huge amount of money. The record of Paris made him a convicted felon who spent four years in prison. He convinced Hapes for making the Chicago win by ten points for some bucks. He even tried to bribe the Filchock initially by sending them to date and later persuading his mind by giving him the temptation of gifting him the car which he wanted to buy. Both the persons took the bribe and lost the match. The gamblers earned huge money as the won the bet on which they had put money. But a small mistake of Hapes and Filhock spoiled their entire career. The event later was known as the biggest American betting scandal. The authority members must shut the betting lines as soon as they found something suspicious. It was found from the analysis that one of the biggest reasons for players to be susceptible to bribe is payment.

The desperate financial need makes the sports player take the bribe. The organization must undertake the task like Financial Fair Pay initiative. It would help the organizations to maintain a fair game. They must also ensure that all the sportspersons are paid sufficient amount of money so that they do not get tempted by the other personalities and they would not throw the game for earning money (Van Der Hoeven, De Waegeneer, Constandt & Willem, 2019). The organizations need to ensure that no other such murky incidents of bribery would be found in future.

Besides, the players must be motivated from time to time so that they only focus on increasing their performance rather than indulging themselves in illegal practices. Intrinsic motivation must be provided to them so that they overcome all the challenges and enjoy the sport thoroughly without any tension. They must also be taught lessons of patriotism so that in case of people like Avan Paris comes to bribe them to throw the match for the other team they can take action against and call the police immediately instead of becoming the prey of the gamblers. They must be trained in such a manner that in case they face any suspicion around them they become alert and do not take any wrong step which will make the heads of the entire country down just for the sake of some money. The coach of the team must always try to understand the team members and must give a fair chance to the players. The coach must make the team members feel satisfied (Forrest & McHale 2019). If they will be satisfied, then the chance of gamblers would reduce. Gamblers, in any case, would not be able to bribe the players and turn the game in their favour. It is the coach who can help build the character traits of the players. There is no doubt the incident has put a question mark in the commitment of the players towards their country.

Match-fixing is a legal issue and the players who get involved in it must be punished as Filcock and Hapes because they violate the trust which is so pure that the thuggish hooligan invests tears of belief in the game. The players not only cheat the sentiments of the people who think that they are watching a real game. The desire of making more money hurt the sentiments of millions of spectators. The players do not have the right to make decisions which are against their team, club, society and the country. It is an illegal practice and must be stopped by giving stringent punishment to both the persons who take the bribe and who offer the bribe to the other (Tak, Sam & Jackson, 2018). The players who were found guilty in such a murky incident loose the trust of fans who support them in the ground when they are representing the country on behalf of millions of people. the players need to be taught that at any case they cannot become slaves of the others. It is their game and they need to play it fair for the country which they represent. Players family members must support them in case they deviate from the path.

Discussions on NFL Match-Fixing Case Study

From the analysis of the case study, it was found that there is a need for the sports organization to conduct an education program in which the players of the team members would be made aware of the sports ethics and how to save themselves from the illegal activities that have been conducted by the other people. It is the responsibility of the organization to make them realize that involving in any unethical practice can destroy their career. A small mistake can turn into a huge career loss. Besides, the committee members that is organizing an international event must monitor the practice of match-fixing. It is a serious offence as the player who fixes the match is playing with the emotions of hundreds and thousands of spectators who come all the way long from a different place to enjoy and watch a fair match between the teams (Comito, 2019). The teams of the respective countries must also ensure that that their team players do not get involved in any illegal practice before and during the match. Sri Lanka becomes the first country to declare match-fixing as a criminal activity. Many countries also came forward and accepted match-fixing as a criminal offence. Although, 1946, NFL match-fixing incident was not based on the betting done by the outsiders still the manipulation of the entire game to win was not correct. Similar incidents have occurred in recent years as well and they need to be stooped so that the game can be played pair between the teams.
