What Are the Mental Health Concerns During Covid-19 Pandemic?

Due to self-isolation in the recent times, pertaining to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, many people were observed to be suffering from mental health related concerns. Majority of the sections of this population belong to the class of patients who were not affected by any illness of such kind, prior to the arrival of this pandemic. A larger spectrum of the population was observed to be suffering from conditions like depression, anxiety or stress related concerns. This was also observed to have an overall impact on the physical well-being of the people, as both state of mind and body go hand in hand. The impact of the pandemic was observed to be quite less in patients who already suffered from various psychotic illnesses (Vindegaard, 2020). One of the main sections of population that was impacted by these mental health conditions were the healthcare workers. As they were the most vulnerable and exposed to the risk of catching the viral infection, symptoms like anxiety and stress were observed to be expressed by them quite often. The initial stages of virus spread came with many deaths and the healthcare workers were found to be lacking the coping mechanism to deal with the underlying stress. With the altered living conditions during the pandemic, elderlies were left without a lack of support system to help them though these tough times. Most of them stayed away from their families and were worried for their near ones.

As the inclination of older people to get affected from this virus was observed to be more, elderly population was subjected to a gruesome level of depression and anxiety (Javed, 2020). This was also a testing times for elderlies suffering from other underlying ailments, such as chronic conditions. Due to their disabled physical state of functioning they were exposed more to developing extreme mental health issues, such as frequent irritability, altered sleep patterns, stress induced trauma, posing a risk to their lives. The fact of not knowing the source of the infection also acted as a trigger for undue fear and concern in the individuals. The self-isolation during the pandemic lead to an uncertain loss of freedom for the individuals and thus, added to the overall deteriorating mental health status of the person. Media coverage of the pandemic outburst also acted as a potential trigger for stress and anxiety in the older section of the population group (Yang, 2020). Multiple panels delivered misinformation regarding the condition, which lead to the development of fear, anxiety and undue stress to the ongoing misery of not only the elderlies but general population as well. The associated stigma aligned with mental health related issues, also stooped these individuals from seeking the desired help from the government organized medium, offering a healing hand to such individuals. There was also a lack of person to person contact, these people lacked the social support system to help resolve their respective spark in the symptoms. Thus, adding to the present misery and to the overall burden on the clinical status of the patient.
