Personal Reflection

As a part of the course curriculum, we were divided into teams to look upon a critical aspect and develop insights through a discussion forum. The topic for the discussion of our particular group revolved around the narrative ageism, how is it perceived in the society, and what are the foundational distinctions between direct and indirect ageism. This discussion was of crucial insight for me as well as my teammates as, when we were reading and developing discussion, it dawned upon us how ageism is not dealt in the society in its true form and is rather marginalized and often ridiculed. Mockery of agism has developed as a socially acceptable norm. I agreed to the notion presented in the discussion of how self-sarcasm, self-pity, and humour associated with ageism is accepted and celebrated as a clear mechanism to repel the ignorance around the phenomenon. When one thinks about ageism, the thoughts of getting old are repelling. These thoughts have been largely implanted and propagated to such an extent that age reversing creams and therapies are all over the market place. Aging is a natural phenomenon that is inevitable and the need for competence and empathetic thinking about same has culminated in me as well as my teammates through this exercise.

The team members largely agreed to the notion that ageism is not only ignored as a society but is often ridiculed. This exercise was also helpful in illuminating the concepts of direct and indirect ageism for both me and my fellow team members. Collectively, in my opinion, this helped us understand the importance of placing the disadvantaged group on the priority. I feel, that this discussion was of prime importance as it helped me understand the importance of embracing ageism and the elderly in the society from a fresh perspective in the aging country with the elderly in a significant proportion. In this exercise, it was also discussed as to how in the process of ageing, the course of conversation shifts and the generation gap prevails in the communication of thoughts and ideas. I think this can be best understood through forever evolution of short languages and abbreviations that develop each day as to how language for communication itself evolves with people of the particular age group being connected to its idea with others secluded.

As a team, it was worth wondering to ponder about what could be defined as the “aged” in a society. This was one of the most essential experience to acknowledge the differing ideas of the teammates that revolved around the biological process of transformation. In my personal experience, I can conclude that the entire process of this assessment was highly enriching and thought invoking. It was a critical discussion that provided me with a lot of new information and directed my thinking to be more empathetic, accepting, and competent. This also helped me understand different views and opinions that are associated with ageism and thereby possess a holistic perspective on the same with an analytical yet empathetic approach.
