With COVID 19 pandemic wave across the world, I decided to choose and write on “how COVID 19 has affected the tourism and travel industry in Australia”. While choosing the topic, we looked forward to the topic which can do justice and also there is enough data around it. Before the topic was finalized, I tried to read through many books and sources so that I get an idea on the topic and what is the future scope. I along with my team member can do justice with the topic. As a team member, we were looking for a topic that would interest everyone and found this to be the most accurate choice. Initially, the background of the report along with the initial literature review was submitted on the topic approval and the team charter. Later, the research questions and problems were also submitted for approval so that the research is done accurately. I encountered certain difficulties in putting forward an accurate research question in the research paper. However, I overcame this issue by going through multiple papers which are easy to be understood and also helped me to understand how to develop accurate research question and problem. Choosing an accurate topic for the research was a new experience as a whole which allowed me to explore different dimensions and topics into consideration. Also, I learned to work in a team, accept ideas from different team members, and work in coordination with everyone. The most important thing which I learned during this phase is how to analyse and write a research problem and research question in the paper. This helped me to put forward a rough framework on how the paper will proceed and satisfy the research questions.
The literature review is one of the most important and time-consuming section of the research paper. While trying to develop the best literature review, I took enough time on finding out papers that focus on the topic. Papers that spoke about the impact of coronavirus on the hotel industry especially in Australia were taken into consideration. Arguments, debates, and counter-arguments of the author on certain points were also analyzed and highlighted in the literature review section. While finding out relevant papers and books, I also learned how to find out papers from the database and also look for peer-reviewed articles so that the information is verified and reliable. I also understood that the literature review is different from the annotated bibliography and is generally formulated by taking different authors and writers into consideration. I developed the skill to critically analyze different papers and then summarize them in the literature review. We learn from a literature review about the different facts and evidence which didn’t work for other researchers or they failed to answer them. Additionally, the literature review helped me to provide evidence that additionally helps to support the findings.
Eliminating the primary method was one of the biggest and difficult decisions that were introduced by me towards the group. With everyone’s agreement towards using secondary data, I focused on collecting literature reviews from a good and accredited database to ensure its validity and reliability. By conducting the methodology using secondary data especially literature reviews and other comparative study papers, I learned that secondary data is much time-saving as compared to primary data. Another important thing which I learned is it is budget-friendly and also extremely easy to be analyzed. During the analysis procedure, I learned that secondary data is the direct attempt to answer the research question and also examine the previous study and how it is answered. Although I struggled a lot with data collection as we chose a recent topic where only limited critical papers and literature reviews were available. Additionally, filtering the most accredited and well-written papers on the coronavirus and its impact on the tourism industry was mandatory. I learned that using the right combination of keywords in the database helped inaccurate data collection and also deriving the best results. During the interpretation part, I took the help of my group members where we collectively worked on the data and tried to be interpretive and derive accurate results. During the methodology section, I learned that choosing the right methods is important to derive accurate results.
One of the biggest challenges which I faced during the research is finding the accurate and relevant data related to the topic. There is a huge amount of data available in the data library but it became difficult to select and use the most accurate data which can help to derive the accurate result. Also, I learned that developing a doable topic at the start of the research paper is important to derive accurate results and also have scope for future research. Another challenge or struggle I faced is dealing with the data. With 1000+ pages of content written on the topic, it was difficult to extract the most accurate and relevant information related to the topic. Also, I learned that throughout the research paper, it is important to stay focused on the topic and use only those data which can help in answering the research problem. While working in the team, I learned the skill of time management where all the task were managed according to the time so that we can complete the paper before the deadline.
Also, I understood that ethical consideration should be taken seriously as they may be considered as an act of plagiarism or inherit someone privacy. Throughout the research paper, ethical consideration was taken into consideration where authors and researchers were credited for their work. The most important thing I learned while working in the team is conflict management. There were conflicts among the few members over a few issues and I slowly developed the skill to resolve the conflict and bring all the team members together. So, this research paper not only helped me to understand how to select a good topic, how to write a literature review, how to conduct methodology and take ethical consideration but it also helped me to excel on qualities which help me to work together in the group. By the end, I also developed excellent sentence formation skill and a proof-reader as the paper was edited and proofread various time before submission. Not only me, but everyone in the group learned to credit the authors with in-text citation and also create a reference list towards the end in Harvard style.
I wrote the literature review section in the report which helped me to develop my reading and analysing skill. During this course work, I remained focus on the topic and collected only those data which can help in answering the research question. The literature review provided me with opportunities to find out relevant data from the market, analyse and also interpret according to the research question which is useful in business research.
