Growing Fresh Food on Future Space Missions

Introduction to Climate Smart Food Systems

Production in space is a new concept which is in trend nowadays. It involves a comprehensive set of processes that’s aims at processing or manufacturing things in space. The current production occurs at low Earth orbits but with the help of production in space the start-up companies can find out ways to manufacture goods or produce veggies for astronauts who are there in the space. The biggest issue with the Astronauts currently is that they do not have anything in the space environment to eat (Whitfield, Challinor & Rees, 2018). Thus the start-up company must come up with ways with the help of which it can overcome this issue and provide a sufficient amount of food which is necessary for survival.

Aim and Research Objectives

The research aims at understanding production in space as it is a growing phenomenon in which various scientist and other people are involved. It is a very challenging task to find which production can be done in space as there is a huge difference between Earth’s atmosphere and gravity in space. The research objectives are thus to help start-ups to think beyond the knowledge and start something new which can help astronauts to survive in space for a longer period.

Research Questions

  • Will the production of food plants can be carried out in space?
  • How the organization will be able to grow plants in a closed environment?
  • Why is it important to give astronauts nutrient-rich food?
  • Does the Start-up company can be successful in space or not?
  • What steps does the start-up company must take and so on?

Literature Review of Climate Smart Food Systems

Meinen, Dueck, Kempkes & Stanghellini, (2018) sated that plants can grow without sunlight in artificial lights of LED. An advanced habitat needs to be created for growing plants in space. It is not impossible but difficult as the scientist will have to release water and nutrients and oxygen to the roots of the plants so that they may grow. However, these plants are enclosed in different kinds of LED lights as well as cameras to get night time images of the plant.

Whereas Hauslage et al. (2018) stated that there is some scientist which stated that production of veggies can be done the other way round without enclosing the plant. They find out that in absence of environmental factors, plants can grow in the light. They identified that a blink of LED creates a spectrum of light suited for the plant's growth. The production of plants in space can significantly add benefit.

Scope and Limitations

The scope of the research is limited as the research conducted is based on food production in space. It is impossible to cover every kind of production which can be carried out in space therefore the research is limited.

Research Methodology

Primary research with the scientists will be done to understand whether the idea of veggies start-up can be executed in space or not. The data collected from the survey will then be analysed by using SPSS (Kumar, 2019). Thematic analysis will be done by converting the data into themes. The themes will then be analysed for finding out inference from it.
