Australian culture is a diverged culture and is influenced by British culture, input from Torres Strait Islander and the aboriginal people. The purpose of the current task is to recognize own cultural values and beliefs and to identify how these influence the thoughts and feeling of people in viewing the world and the people.
Having been born in mainland Australia, I identify with Australian the local culture to a large extent. I belief that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are a part of the Australian culture, though the native language of the Aboriginal people differs from the language I speak in. On the other hand, the way of life I lead, social customs and social behavior, law, ceremony change from culture to culture. For instance, Aboriginal people mostly focus on social relationships and issues related to respect and trust. These viewpoints have developed from my cultural lenses which I have created since childhood.
My cultural lenses have been influenced by educational, political, and financial, health, national, generational and familial practices and related factors. For instance, I belief there has been an influence by my family members, peers, teachers and other people during my formative years that has led me to behave in a certain way, conduct work and resolve conflicts in a certain manner and use specific language. The interaction with different cultural people has led me to understand that cultural factors highly influence a person’s own viewpoints which they have developed since early days in life.
The standards of the Nurses and Midwifery registration board has unified the healthcare culture throughout the healthcare system that each and every health providers are required to follow. I think that I have to develop my cultural lenses as respectful to all the patients regardless of their culture. I also need to work for maintaining multidisciplinary trust so that collaborative work culture can be developed. Apart from that I also need to be kind to all the patients or case users. For instance, as the aboriginal people beliefs in maintaining good relationship and trust with each other, I need to develop a trustworthy relationship with them to ease out the treatment stress.
As I have decided to work as a registered nurse in future, it is always possible that my cultural lenses will influence my behaviors and style for caring aboriginal people. On the other hand, I will be influenced by the language I use and may create difficulty in communicating with the aboriginal people. However, as a committed nurse, I have decided to incorporate the Nurses and Midwifery registration board standards into my behavior so that I can work effectively with people from different cultures.
