Child Abuse as a Social Issue

The topic is mainly concerned with the vulnerability of the disabled children towards abuse and violence. There are several issues regarding the child protection practices, government and non-governmental services, accessibility of those mechanisms and so on. These increase the risk of the disabled children to be violated often as it is difficult to address their problems. Practitioners also face difficulties in reaching to the disabled children due to different barriers such as lack of confidence in handling the disabled children and their problems. Additionally, there is a lack of practice guidelines for treating disabled children in a protective policy though researchers suggest that they are required to be kept at the heart of the mechanism. Apart from that, it has been identified that critical disability studies are also crucial to uplift the children with disability from their position of increased risk of being violated. Therefore, it can be stated that critical thinking and understanding is required to be implemented by the practitioners as well as governmental and non-governmental mechanisms are required to ensure the effectiveness of care practices.

In this article the authors Banks et al., (2017) highlights the increased risk of the disabled children to be violated worldwide. Although there are several attempts have been taken by the governmental and non-governmental (local communities or NGOs), the problems persist due to the lower inclusiveness of the disabled children. This study aimed at better understanding of the experience of the children facing violence and accessibility of the child protection mechanisms to them in a setting of lack of resources. In doing so, the authors conducted a semi structured interview with 43 child-caregiver pair chosen purposively from Kasungu and Mulanje districts in Malawi and Kamuli district in Uganda. In order to analyze the data, thematic analysis and constant comparison under grounded theory has been used. This article can be successfully used for my research topic as it provides a range of evidences regarding the experience of the children with disability and their reach to the services offered by different government and non-government sectors. The results showed that the most common form of violation was bullying and verbal abuse. The inability of the programs to address such problems were due to lack of inclusive program offered by the local government, budget and supportive socio-economic conditions of receiving care along with stigma and negative attitude. Therefore, it can be stated that the child protection policies are required to be made disability-inclusive.

The current article makes attempts for addressing the risks with child protection relating to disability to discuss in the light of child protection academics. It is identified by the author Flynn (2020) that though there is a heightened risk for the abuse and neglecting the disabled children, there is a lack of scholarly studies conducted considering this topic. It is useful for my research topic as the main interest area of the research is gathering information regarding the increased risk of the disabled children and young people and associated other aspects. This article is concerned with critical disability studies so that understanding about disability through use of critical thinking can be implemented. The critical disability studies are developed effectively to contribute to the relevant field by questioning its own worth considering culture and language. Through combining these with the experience of the disabled children in the relevant field is essential. Therefore, inclusion of the critical disability studies in informing about the risks of disabled children for experiencing neglect and abuse. These studies are also provided importance by the author as these studies have the potential to understand safeguard disabled children. Therefore, it can be stated that while working on the prevention of disabled child abuse and violence, considering critical disability studies is crucial.

This article is concerned about the abuse and violence towards disabled children that are often undetected and not reported. Therefore, the specific issues faced by the practitioners while supporting the children with disability. It is relevant to my research study as this article helps in understanding the issues practitioners face affecting the disabled child protection so that those issues may be minimized. In doing so, the author held interview with the participants selected from six local authority areas, five different services and five focus groups. This study provides an opportunity to understand how important it is to keep the child at the heart of child protection assessment and intervention whatever the disability the child has. As suggested by the results of the study, high levels of interagency working. The practitioners have been identified to face issues working with the disabled children. Therefore, it has been considered that the child protection and care practitioners working with the disabled children often face difficulties in identifying actual requirements of the child which lead to the issue in reaching to the child with protective measures. Considering the findings of the study, it can be stated that children are required to be placed at the centre of the protective care which will help in improving child protection.
