Observed every year on June 8, World Ocean Day was proposed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1992. The United Nations (UN) declared it as an official occasion only in 2008.

The idea was proposed by the UN to celebrate and connect the ocean with life and livelihood also coined sometimes as Ocean’s human connection.

To bring about awareness among people of the benefits of the ocean, and their initiatives to protect the ocean from further deterioration, the UN has hosted different themes each year to celebrate the day.

In the year 2021, the Covid pandemic theme focus remains on ‘life and livelihood that the ocean sustains’. About two-thirds of the earth’s surface is ocean land, which helps the planet from warming up, providing 50 percent of the oxygen available in the air. The UN said laws need to be implemented in a bid to save the blue planet, however, the onus also falls on human beings to safeguard the water bodies inside the ocean to protect it as well as the planet --the human connection!
