The decision to keep their borders closed for a prolonged period of time has affected Australia’s share of global international students to an extent that a lot of applicants have started making arrangements in Canada and the UK. These two countries are presently operating with more open borders and thus, offer in-person classes as opposed to online teaching. The Vice-Chancellor of Western Sydney University, Barney Glover, said that a student, who recently got admission in one of the postgraduate courses, has now declined the offer since he has applied in the UK. Glover added that the reason why an increasing number of students are declining seats offered at Australian universities is because they do not want to study their courses online, which is the present and only option available in Australia. Students are prioritising travelling to the UK to pursue higher education despite the risks of COVID that ravaged the entire nation. Australian universities believe that the number of international students will increase after November but at a gradual pace.
