Stanford University has unveiled a new initiative to use the university's technical capabilities as well as its teaching and learning experience to reach students who have traditionally been underserved by higher education. For the autumn quarter, Stanford Digital Education's initial trial with the Ed Equity Lab enrolled more than 220 students from throughout the country in a credit-bearing introductory course, Computer Science 105.

Provost Persis Drell said that "We are happy to join with the Ed Equity Lab on this pilot course as part of Stanford's endeavor to enhance the university's social influence at the local, national, and global levels." Stanford Digital Education strives to help Stanford's online and hybrid education techniques innovate. As the work with the Ed Equity Lab indicates, its purpose is to promote and amplify digital education efforts across Stanford's schools and offices, assisting in the incubation of new ideas and projects while offering a framework for internal and external collaboration
