Just days after the federal government decided that foreign students will not return in large numbers until 2022, New South Wales began preparing to carry them back in months using a 600-bed purpose-built quarantine facility. Dominic Perrottet, the state treasurer, told the Australian newspaper that some students could return as early as semester two, which begins in August. The purpose-built quarantine is to set a 600-bed for the returning international students with the accommodation for 14 days.
Furthermore, rather than take commercial seats from returning Australians, chartered flights will be used. However, the proposal still needs to be approved by the federal education minister. In addition, to bring in international students, Australia’s quarantine caps, virus outbreaks and vaccine rollout have been included in their plan. The model of purpose-built quarantine is only being implemented to bring overseas students to their study.
