The US Department of State (DOS) consular office indicated it might waive the US visa interview requirement for F, M, and academic J visa applicants, saving international students delay.

The waiver is applicable up to age 14 for students who got their visa earlier or the first-time F, M, and academic J visa applicants from countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).

Student visas are of two types: academic (F) and non-academic (M). And a J visa for non-immigrant individuals for exchange visitors programmes between countries.

For an F or M visa, enrolment in SEVP-approved schools is essential; these schools are approved by the Department of Homeland Security for an F visa for overseas studies.

Applicants with an F-1 / M-1 visa would be considered for an NIE automatically. However, J-1 visa holders need to contact their local embassy for a National Interest Exception (NIE) from an American Consulate before travel.

During this global pandemic, each consular department continuously assesses its visa adjudication capabilities. Visit the embassy or consulate website for further info.F
