La Trobe and the University of Western Australia are the latest Australian universities planning cuts to Asian studies programs and staff due to financial compulsions.

La Trobe Asia university fosters academic and public engagement in Australia. It now houses only three staff and a part-time member after the restructuring.

Following La Trobe, the University of Western Australia (UWA) intends to obviate Asian studies research positions.

Hence, the entire disciplines of anthropology and sociology will now foster language education only to promote sustainable growth for financial inclusion.

According to their director, communications, the proposed changes are being assessed area wise and measured against the University's student-centric and broader priorities, in which Social Sciences remains the first area to go.

The implementation of only teaching-focused appointments intends to benefit only Asian language instruction, reportedly.

The Asian Studies Association of Australia found the move concerning and said 'scholars of Asia are considered dispensable at a time when Asia remains one of the most important regions, and Australia is located within it’.

However, as seen by students, teachers and Asian Study Centre alike, the move has been summed up as a death knell for social studies internationally, wherein, the UK had set a precedent a while ago.
