Wainwright, less than two hours southeast of Edmonton, tied up in partnership with the University of Calgary for Wainwright nursing students.

Till recently, Wainwright nursing students had to look elsewhere for nursing training. The tie-up means, now Wainwrights’ rural nursing students will no longer have to relocate to earn a degree.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) will provide classroom space and hands-on training at Wainwright Health Centre, hence on.

Sandra Davidson, dean of nursing at the University of Calgary, is thrilled with the prospect of partnering with AHS and the Wainwright community to develop and enhance the rural nursing workforce,” she said

Adding further, Sandara highlighted, Alberta spends $3 million to staff distant area stationed nursing practitioners. The pilot programme, Wainwright, will now expand to other rural towns shortly.

The pilot program was a cohort of eight students’ ideas. In the first year, the program will mix online and virtual courses, with in-person instructors video conferencing with students. Classes and laboratories will only be added in subsequent years.

Wainwright has now opened its applications for students to apply for the 2022-23 school year also.
