How did Thanksgiving Start?

The day of joy and excitement has deep roots in religious and cultural traditions. It has long been celebrated joyfully as a secular holiday as well. The holiday remains a day for Americans to have a get-together with their family and friends for feasting, and football.

The year 1621 is acknowledged as the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies when the Plymouth colonies, along with Wampanoag Native Americans, shared an autumn harvest feast. Individual colonies and states celebrated Thanksgiving Day for more than two centuries. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the civil war, that U.S President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be celebrated each November.

The First Thanksgiving

In September 1620, Mayflower, a small ship left Plymouth, England with 102 passengers- a religious separatist assortment looking for a new home to freely practice their faith and others lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the new free world. The 66 days of treacherous and uncomfortable crossings ended when their anchors were dropped near the tip of Cape Cod. It was not their intended destination. They were north at the mouth of the Hudson River. After a month, the ship crossed Massachusetts Bay, and when they reached to establish what is now commonly known as the work of establishing a village at Plymouth.

Throughout that first brutal winter, most colonists safeguarded themselves by remaining on the ship where they suffered from exposure, scurvy, and various outbreaks of contagious disease. It is estimated that only one of the on-board passengers remained to see their first New England spring. Later, in March, the remaining crew members moved ashore, where they were visited by an Abenaki Native American, and greeted in English.

Later the visitor helped the passengers in settling, and the ways to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish, and avoid poisonous plants. Days passed, and in November 1621, the pilgrim’s first corn harvest was proved successful, and to celebrate this achievement, Governor William Bradford organized a grand feast and invited the fledgling colony’s Native American allies group including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit.

Although they did not use the term “first Thanksgiving” for this feast, it lasted for three days! While there exists no official record of what happened on the first Thanksgiving Day or its exact menu, but whatever we know about it comes from Pilgrim Chronicler Edward Winslow, who penned down:

“Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together after we had gathered the fruits of our labors; they four in one day killed as much fowl, as with a little help beside, served the Company almost a week, at which time amongst other Recreations, we exercised our arms many of the Indians coming amongst us, and amongst the rest, their greatest king Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five deer, which they brought to the Plantation and bestowed on our Governor, and upon the Captain and others. And although it is not always so plentiful, as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want, that we often wish you partakers of our plenty."
