The transition to transgender has been a controversial topic from a long time. In order to understand the mind set of those who transform themselves can face a lot of turmoil. For them it is a change of outlook from the people around whom they live. The acceptance of change can take a lot of time. In accordance with Piaget's developmental theory, the period of adolescence is the “period of storm”. According to Clark, (2017), the storm is here meant to be the dilemma faced by the teens regarding their identity and the question themselves what they are meant to be (Clark, 2017). The questioning of self is very normal in this age. For the maximum of them, the question is regarding their biological identity that can be either masculine or feminine. The transgenders, in this case, feel a strong sense of confusion in gender identity that can also be identified as conflict. This thought process leads to negativity and also isolation from others. This affects their mental health(Clark, 2017). Being overshadowed by this feeling of conflict they start resisting himself from getting in touch with others, and they do not find any confidant with whom they can share their inside conflicts.
The transitions can be of the following types, medical transition, social transition or both. There can be reasons for choosing the transition. It is the change in attire and outfit, change in name, and change in choices that can be taken as social transition. The Factor of medical expenses, availability of insurance that would cover the transition process. Gender identity remains a debatable topic. The phase of life changes after transition and the individual and the society collectively takes time to accept the new identity.
In dealing with such adolescents, one of the theories that can work well is Schlossberg’s transition Theory. This theory is related to life events. It is the result of the transition that is events or non-events aspects. These aspects lead to identification of the transition process that causes an impact on the individual. According to Scmitt and Schiffman (2019), the transition occurs due to change in behaviour, role, learning and perceptions of individuals. This theory perfectly justifies the transition the transgenders might face that would change their behaviour and role. This theory also provides the coping strategies for the problems faced by the transgenders. The theory initiates the rule of four ‘S’ that are support, strategies, self and situation. These methods can be applied for helping oneself get out of a disturbing situation and also help in adjustment when there is no scope of avoiding or moving out from circumstances(Schmitt & Schiffman, 2019).
In nursing, while caring for the transgender, one need to identify and think about the knowledge they have about the transgender. The biasness must not be included while the treatment of transgender adolescents. A nurse must not assume gender or ask to specify sexuality on the basis of the pronoun. The nurse must display that she is aware of the emotional conflicts that are related to the transgenders. According to Hein and Levitt (2014), the proper education of the nurses must be done in order to ensure the transitions and shoes also have knowledge about the medical procedures, hormonal studies and surgery related to the transgender people (Hein & Levitt, 2014).
The inclusion of sensitive questions that may put a potential risk on the mind of transgenders must be avoided at any cost. The victims of drug abuse, sexual violence, lower insurance ability or mental health disorders must be dealt with full care and compassion. The nurses must show empathy to them so that they might not feel outcast. The patients must be dealt with dignity, and it is the ethical responsibility of the nurses to be aware of the medical process that is used in the transition process. No such gestures should be made which would degrade the enthusiasm of the transgender adolescents.
According to Telfer et al., (2018), there are methods that can be applied in nurturing the process of transition in transgender adolescents.
The nature and the problems that transgenders face must be dealt with care. They are an important part of the society. They too deserve equal status as other people. Therefore, it can be concluded that the transition of transgenders is not an imaginative thing and it must be addressed properly at medical level as well.
