In part 1 of the assignment, the issue identified was that Mrs. Nguyen was being administered a medication numerous times despite the order to stop the medications. There were two ANUMS and two RNs on duty. But the mistake suggests lack of team-based work and poor handover communication. There were many barriers that affected team performance in part 1 of the assignment. Firstly, lack of effective communication is the main barrier that affected team performance. It implies gap in written communication as well as verbal handover communication with the team. The dilitaizem was ceased on day one. Despite this, the nurses administered it every day indicating lack of proper handover notes related to ceasing the medication. Effective team work depends on effective team communication process. It involves clarifying and restating responsibilities to the team and correct documentation of progress or key activities in the handover report (Eggins & Slade, 2015). However, ineffective communication in this area contributed to poor team performance and failure in following the clinical notes for the patient.
The second barrier that affected team performance is the absence of a team leader or effective leadership style. Although two registered nurses were present in the ward, but no one exhibited leadership role and guided team-members towards effective performance. According to Perez (2021), leader’s influence team dynamics by providing direction, implementing plan and motivating the workers. They have the quality of motivating workers to engage in quality care and provide a vision to the subordinates. However, in the case scenario, it has been found that no one took the leadership role and reviewed performance of staff members. Because of this, no scrutiny of nursing activities took place and same medication was being given to patient without any interrogation from anyone. Such issues can be resolved with the help of effective communication style. Transformational leaders can support nurses to adapt well to the existing environment and achieve the goals of the organization. Such leaders can facilitate coordination of safe and efficient care. They focus on coordinating team processes and delegating task in hand effectively (O'Donovan et al., 2021). Thus, transformational leadership style can improve team climate and lead to positive outcomes such as increase in quality of care and open communication process. The findings suggest the importance of training and encouraging nurses to take on leadership role to achieve optimal outcomes for patient. To conclude, poor communication and leadership style can negative affect team performance. In contrast, transformational leadership style can facilitate engaging in effective team work.
