Which 2 Codes From the Nmba Code of Conduct (2018) Does Alice Follow by Reporting Sarina’s Actions to the Nurse Unit Manager?

The two standards of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, which were breached are: standard 2 and standard 6. Standard 2 states that nurses should be engaged in professional and therapeutic relationships. This will help to build trust and respect between healthcare professionals. Communication is the key to building a trusting relationship and it helps to build a person's culture, values, dignity, rights, and beliefs. Support should be provided directly to the people to ensure some health-related decisions. The health care professionals should ensure that all the individual's needs are respected and if there is anything wrong happening, then it should be reported immediately. In the case study, it has been observed that Sarina has been stealing medication, and this is a punishable offense. When the nurses are involved in the therapeutic relationship, they can easily point out the mistake and it can be taken care of in long run. This standard states that a culture of safety and learning should be promoted. This is essential as it will engage all the health care professionals adequately (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2023).

The other standard which needs to be taken care of is standard 6, which focuses on providing safe, responsive, and appropriate nursing practice. In the case study it has been observed that safe and quality practice is not been followed, this will ensure that adequate and safe care is been provided to the patient. An effective range of assessment techniques needs to be followed and relevant and accurate information should be taken care of. In the case study, it has been observed that as Sarina stole the medication it affect the patient's safety and well-being. The nurses should provide timely supervision and direction, this will ensure that all the delegated practices are correct and safe. In the case study it has been observed although all the tasks were delegated effectively there were still some problems encountered. This standard also states that all practices are followed by relevant health and nursing guidelines, regulations, standards, and legislation. When the case study is been observed it can be stated that all the guidelines and legislations were not been followed effectively. A defined appropriate process needs to be identified and reported, this will help in the identification of all the risks which might be present (Forrester, 2018).

What Are 2 Breaches of the Registered Nurses Standards of Practice (2016) Demonstrated by Sarina?

The Code of Conduct which was demonstrated by Alice while reporting Sarina's action to the Nurse Unit Manager is mentioned and explained below. The first code of conduct which was not been followed is that the nurse ensured that safety is been practiced. In the case study, it has been observed that the nurse has followed this effectively. If this has been followed effectively then the nurse would not have been allowed in the room where the drug is stored and if due to some emergency nurse needs to go in that room then someone should assist them. Since the drug was stolen from that room, the patient who require the medication was not able to receive it. There are several ethical reasons which need to be taken care of, in this case, study although the other nurse was a friend, however, she complained and this was a wise thing to do, this will ensure that this mistake is not repeated in the future. If there is any mistake witnessed by any health care professional, then it should be immediately reported without any delay. Communication is the key hence ways should be discovered to improve communication within the team and chances of mistakes are reduced (Cowin et al., 2018).

Another ICN Code of Ethics which is been demonstrated in the case study is that nurses have maintained professional relationships. Although Sarina was a friend of Alice still she did not hesitate to register the complaint and she immediately registered the complaint when she witnessed that something wrong happened. Nurse has maintained professional boundary and their skills to maintain patient safety. It is necessary to maintain professional boundaries as it will avoid any sort of conflict of interest which might be present. It is also necessary self-reflection needs to be followed, self-reflection will allow one to understand one's own mistake and then take a step in that direction (ICN Code of Ethics, 2023). In the case study, the nurse understood the importance of it and worked in that direction. While they are involved in taking care of the patient they should ensure patient safety and well-being are maintained. The nurse should actively participate in maintaining the health and well-being of the patient, and all the steps should be followed effectively. The nurses should demonstrate the ability to take care of the patient and provide them with the best care (Cooper et al., 2018).

What 1 Breach of the Drugs, Poisons, and Controlled Substances Regulation (2017) and 1 Breach of the Medication Safety Standard (2022) Does Sarina Show?

Ans 3: There are several standards of the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Act 1981 which are designed to encourage medicines, and poisons with the partnership with manufacturers, health practitioners, and suppliers. Several regulations cover the supply of medicines and this will ensure the supply of medicine and the safety and well-being of the patient. In the case study, it has been observed that the nurse has taken the medication without any supervision and she has technically stolen it. This has created chaos, as the medication was stolen it has created a deficit for the patient and the patient's well-being will be affected. This is a highly important standard and it needs to be followed. Several drugs display certain side effects hence, the drugs should be stored carefully and they should not be easily accessible to everyone. In the case study, the nurse should not be able to access the drug easily, and if any drug is taken from the room, it should be documented. Only the medical health practitioner should have the freedom to prescribe the medication that will ensure safety (Government of Australia, 2021).

The National Safety and Quality Health Safety Standards: Medication Safety Standard (2022), is breached in the case study. There are several criteria present in this standard, however, not all criteria will fit it only a few will fit. The criteria which fit the best is to apply the quality improvement system, the quality of the medication administration will be improved. In the case study, it has been observed that the medication was not administered how it should be and this led to several charges against the nurse also. The criteria state that reporting any incident should be done, this will ensure that the matter is not escalated in any future and is controlled at an early stage. The case study displays magnificent examples of reporting the incident and after reporting incident management. After the incident is reported it has been effectively investigated with the assistance of a proper team (National Safety and Quality Health Safety Standards, 2021).
