Topic Area and Reason For Choosing

I selected telehealth in primary care as a topic because of its rising relevance and potential to alter healthcare delivery. I've seen an increase in the usage of telehealth technology and virtual care platforms throughout the years, particularly in reaction to the COVID-19 epidemic. This encounter piqued my curiosity in learning more about the advantages, disadvantages, and consequences of telehealth in primary care settings. Furthermore, I feel that telehealth is consistent with my professional objectives, beliefs, and aspirations. As a nurse, I am committed to providing clients with accessible and patient-centred care. Telehealth provides options to overcome distance, transportation, and restricted healthcare resources, allowing patients to comfortably obtain primary care services. It also enables the delivery of comprehensive care, including patient education, remote monitoring, and prompt interventions (O'Cathain et al. 2016, p 163). As a result, the chosen area of professional practice within the nursing sector is the use of telehealth in primary care, and I will focus on Exploring the Implications and Effectiveness of Telehealth in Primary Care in a larger context.

Significance and Relevance

Telehealth in primary care is relevant in the context of nursing because of its ability to address contemporary healthcare concerns, contribute to patient care, and develop nursing knowledge and practise. Telehealth consultations in primary care cut travel time by 50% and saved an average of 110 minutes per patient compared to in-person appointments, according to Kelley et al. (2020, p. 104228). This increased accessibility guarantees that patients receive timely care, resulting in improved health outcomes. Telehealth also improves the convenience and continuity of service for patients. Patients may consult with healthcare experts from the convenience of their own homes, minimising travel and waiting times (Chen et al. 2019, p. 3988). Individuals can actively participate in their care by accessing information, self-management tools, and tele-monitoring services, which increase patient involvement and empowerment. Furthermore, telehealth has the potential to increase nursing research and practise. It necessitates that nurses learn new skills such as providing virtual care, conducting remote evaluations, and utilising digital communication technologies (Xue et al. 2021, p. 10-15). Nurses may broaden their area of practice, participate in care coordination, and give education and support to patients remotely by adopting telehealth. It also provides opportunities for research and innovation in telehealth therapies, patient outcomes, and health-care system changes.
The COVID-19 pandemic has hastened the uptake and acceptability of telemedicine in primary care, according to growing trends. It has emphasised the significance of telehealth as a viable alternative to in-person care, guaranteeing service continuity during times of crisis (Guo and Albright, 2018, p 397-401). However, difficulties relating to technical infrastructure, privacy, reimbursement, and fair access remain and must be solved before the full promise of telehealth in primary care can be realised.

Search Strategy

A comprehensive search technique will be used to locate relevant literature sources on telehealth in primary care. I'll start with academic databases like PubMed, CINAHL, and Scopus. These databases provide a wide selection of peer-reviewed periodicals and research papers in the subject of nursing and healthcare. I'll use a mix of keywords to find material on telehealth in primary care. Some first search terms may include "telehealth", "telemedicine", "virtual care", "primary care", "nursing", and "patient-centred care". These keywords will assist me in locating papers focusing on the usage of telehealth technology in primary care settings and its influence on nursing practice. To narrow my results, I'll add terms linked to particular features of telehealth, such as "remote monitoring", "teletriage", "teleconsultation", and "telehealth competencies". This method will allow me to have access to material on a wide range of issues related to telehealth in primary care.
