Leadership in nursing is of prime value as it helps in decision making, workforce and task management, conflict resolution, and ensures better care and overall experience of the patients in the café facility (Miles & Scott, 2019). As nurse leader must be composite, well-versed in the standards that is required, confident in conduct, and possess leadership skills and learnings that can be applied in different clinical scenarios (Giddens, 2018). Different scenarios demand a specific approach and therefore, based on that the leadership styles are classified into transformational, democratic, autocratic, Laissez-Faire, and servant leadership styles (Weiss, Trappan, & Grimely, 2019). In this essay, I will explore the leadership qualities I observed and was influenced by one of the senior nurses in my placement. This essay also identified the importance of healthcare leadership and the essential requirements of the same and reflects on the leadership skills that I wish to develop in my future.
As a student nurse, I was placed in a clinic to assist and learn the nursing skills in a clinical placement. It was then the significance of leadership in nursing skills was demonstrated to me through living experience and observation of the head nurse, registered nurse (RN) Dawes (Pseudonym). Clinic management and time management require rigorous inputs and the same was demonstrated throughout the period of my placement by RN Dawes. At times of conflict resolution, she exhibited intense listening and collaborative skills where she asserted on first understanding the complete situation from every perspective and then make an informed decision in the welfare of everyone. Further, records and duties were always pre-informed with backups in reach to ensure availability of staff and adequate time management. Reporting under RN Dawes required attention and precision to work as she maintained individual follow-ups on the developments and often conducted meetings for feedback, concerns, and scope of improvement in practice. This helped us to reach a coherent solution to problems and concerns that were being faced in the clinic. As a senior nurse, she also asserted on the importance of training of the new students like me and suggested new reading material and case analysis reports to grow my knowledge apply my learnings in the clinical environment.
The two qualities that gathered my prime attention were conflict resolution and time management. Conflict resolution is a critical quality in effective nursing leadership. Conflicts in a healthcare setting may arise due to various reasons like ambiguities in the roles and responsibilities, communication errors, and lack of collaboration (Murray, 2017). Therefore, it becomes crucial for a nurse leader to intervene and resolve the conflict in a fair and just manner to maintain harmony in the workforce and prevent further accelerations. This quality appealed the most because, as a leader, one must possess the ability to understand the needs of the team, prevent ambiguities that can cause a conflict, and troubleshoot the problems with strong decision-making abilities to finally resolve the conflict (Fischer, 2016). A healthcare setting is a busy place and therefore, the second quality that appealed me the most was effective time management (Thabet et al., 2017). Conflict resolution also helps in minimizing ethical dilemmas and assists in troubleshooting of problems that may affect the process of decision making. It also ensures that the ethical conducts are followed and applied in the clinical setting through assessment of conflicts and misunderstandings. As a nurse leader, it is important to undertake several tasks and provide adequate time for each to ensure that all the responsibilities are fulfilled and highest quality of care to patients and a constructive working environment is maintained (Thomas et al., 2017). Therefore, time management is integral to good leadership in clinical practice that helps in critical management of workforce, due tasks, and the nursing priorities in a healthcare setting.
Leadership skills are acquired through knowledge, experience, and practice. From the list of skills, I think, the two skills that I aim to focus on further developments are decision making and conflict resolution. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia also identifies conflict resolution and enhanced decision-making abilities as coherently essential skills in competent nursing practice (Bryce, Foley & Reeves, 2017). I think conflict resolution and decision making are core responsibilities of a nurse leader and can be acquired largely through experience and information gaining from experiences of others along with textual learning (Thabet et al., 2017). In critical situations, a nurse leader is subjected to intense decisions that can have extreme outcomes (McCaffery & Reinoso, 2017). Therefore, a rationalized decision-making ability serves as a tool to make prompt, evidence-based, and rationalized decisions. To develop this skill I will focus on learning the abilities through readings and training and work experience through clinical experience as a student nurse. I will also retrospect the process and observe my seniors learn and acquire the skill. I also aim to learn conflict resolution skills by advancing my knowledge about the process, developing active listening skills, and enhanced communication to promote my ability to resolve conflicts as a future clinician.
This essay provides a summary of essential nursing leaderships that are required to advance as a nurse leader in future. An example from lived experience has been used in the study to identify the critical leadership skills and pin its relevance in the healthcare practice. Further, the application of two nursing skills adopted from the example has been reviewed in the essay. Moreover, for personal skill development., nursing leadership skills, conflict resolution and decision making have also been addressed with the need of skill development in these sectors along with means to advance these learnings for my skill development to advance as a competent future clinician.
