Hello everyone today my presentation is about disconnected intimacy among Chinese international students. The topic is blacklisting one’s parents is considered extremely inappropriate in the Chinese context (Zhao, 2019). Due to the rise of technology, it has been observed that there is a form of disconnection between young people and their families. There is a disconnection from the general public as well as from the family due to the intimate spaces that have been created through social media. For this reason, most young people have detached themselves from intimate spaces and therefore they have resisted familiar control and surveillance. For this reason, most young people have developed disconnected intimacy which is considered an inappropriate practice in the Chinese context. In this, case I will introduce some of the relevant theories that I read regarding the chosen case in everything everywhere all at once.
Chinese being one of the most populated countries has always had most of its population immigrants moving from one location to the other. For this reason, most Chinese international students will always find themselves in various European countries while searching for better education. One of the areas where there is a high number of Chinese international students in Australia. According to recent data, there are over 500,000 enrolled Chinese students in various international universities. Technology is also raising very fast and China is considered one of the fastest-developing countries in terms of technology (Ishii-Kuntz, 2021). For this reason, Chinese students have always adopted technology, especially social media to help them in navigating through their educational studies. However, there have been negative consequences when it comes to social media concerning transnational family practices. Considering that most of the work requires the use of social media technology to dispense assessments and other assignments social media is also being used for contact with family members (Mills, et al., 2021). It is also very important in supporting international students with their life abroad and therefore young students will need to negotiate their daily interactions through the use of information and communication technology.
My main argument is the identity issues which have intensified. One of the consequences of modernity is the pursuit of money. There is also the cultural bondage of reasons to humanity. As technology continues to intensify modernity and identity perceptions are losing their places in Chinese culture. According to the case study, everything is everywhere all at once Evelyne and her husband left Asia for rational reasons. Due to modernity issues, the couple did not fare well in America. They encountered challenges in longer business and other different universes which affected their cultural backgrounds. In this case, most of the Chinese students who are going abroad are mainly doing so in need of a better future and exploration of money.
Identity refers to the need for individuals to determine their status concerning gender and class. It means that identity defines cultural values have seen as a matter of identification. In most cases, Chinese grandparents play a major role in taking care of your grandchildren. For that reason, the grandchildren are expected to respect and care for their grandparents when they grow. It is for this reason that blacklisting grandparents is considered extremely inappropriate behaviour. According to recent studies that have concentrated on Chinese culture it has been absorbed that most Chinese families that have immigrated to European countries and the United States undergo a lot of an acculturation gap for balance between old and young generations (Mueller & Elder, 2019). This is creating a lot of conflicts and leading to an increased alienation which is existing between the grandparents and their grandchildren. It has also been observed that this aspect is also influencing the immigrant transparent physical and psychological well-being. Grandparents play a vital role in linking the children to their parents and these close ties are being broken down due to social media and rising technology. The term acculturation in this case means the process of cultural removal which is a reflecting subcomponent of retaining the original culture and establishing a cultural heritage while being influenced by modernity. It has become extremely difficult for older immigrants to adapt to the recent society because of their strong traditional backgrounds. For example, it is observed that when immigrant students are accultured they become accustomed to new culture leading to the adaption of a new language observed in their foreign countries. This is preventing them from adhering to their traditional cultural values which have been weakening with time. Technology has eroded close gaps between grandchildren and grandparents leading to changes in attitudes and values. This gap due to modernity is affecting the identity between the grandchildren and their grandparents (Qin, 2018). Due to the process of acculturation, most of the younger generation have found it easy to replace their parents and grandparents on a block list. This goes against the Chinese culture where parents are to be given a lot of respect. The case study is affecting the Chinese cultural mainstream values. Social media has prevented the requirement for physical space which has become obsolete due to the different types of communication models. Social media such as Facebook and Twitter have made it very easy to maintain offline relationships. In this way, physical networking has been reduced because traditional meetings are no longer effective especially due to distance.
Secondly, identity can be defined as validation in everyday life which is providing a rational basis when it comes to individuals’ behaviour. Regarding cultural studies and criticism, identity assumes two meanings. The first meaning is the clear standards by which an individual or a group is determined by their status within society, including gender class and even race. The other meaning is the determination of cultural identity as a matter already education (Silverstein & Chen, 2016). Cultural identity is considered a collective aspect which is reflecting common historical experiences and cultural symbols. In this case, it is supposed to be expressing change and differences in continuity. People need culture so that they can construct their own identity from the rational basis of their daily actions. It must also be noted that identities are also continuously being validated. For that reason, when it comes to understanding and incorporating the surrounding world there is a need for individuals to come up with a stable cognition that is influencing people's perceptions. These validations come in form of recognition that is being afforded by the other’s collaboration and there is a form of existence when it comes to their pre-existing understandings. This theory processes have an impact when it comes to immigrants’ identity issues (Smith & Hung, 2019). As can be seen, Chinese international students have adopted the use of social media as a form of communication with their parents as they try to adapt to the new environment. The same channels have been used to transition into the new culture, therefore, creating a complex space when it comes to intercultural concerns.
According to Chinese culture, grandparents believe that their grandchildren are a source of happiness and perceive them as a source of continuity in the family lane and hence not observed as a burden. In most cases, Chinese grandparents feel happy when their grandchildren are around them because they tend to create a different atmosphere for them. It becomes difficult for any grandparent to find out that their children have included them in a blacklist. According to studies that have been conducted on acculturation between grandparents and their grandchildren it has been observed that most Chinese grandparents find it very difficult to communicate using social media technology. This has created a barrier that is preventing them from communicating with their grandchildren and is affecting their relationship. Most Chinese international students are forced to adopt new languages such as English and French as mainstream languages (Smokowski & Bacallao, 2019). They need to adapt to these languages to survive in their new environment. Most of the grandparents on the other hand will prefer to use their traditional language. This has made it difficult for the younger generation to maintain their ethnic identity because of the expression of the different aspects of their host culture. Due to the assimilation of most of these grandchildren into the mainstream American and European culture it has become difficult to prevent conflict and bad relationships between grandparents and their grandchildren. While most of these grandparents detest the use of technology the fact that their grandchildren might place them on a block list would hurt them. In most cases, most grandparents have been forced to adapt to lower expectations when it comes to what they expect from their grandchildren. Even though the grandparents have a desire to care and concern for their grandchildren they have developed an estranged relationship with their grandchildren as most of their grandchildren have chosen to adjust their behaviour mindset and expectations (Tienda, 2017). This has related to the grandchildren changing their life still instead of holding to past cultural behaviour. Due to this, it is important to understand the role of the middle generation when it comes to maintaining grandparent and grandchild relationships. It is expected that the middle generation becomes mediators’ models and instructors and even interpreters when it comes to strengthening the grandparent-grandchild relationship. For example, parents are expected to remind their grandchildren to always call their grandparents occasionally to catch up with them. Family generational were expected to educate their children on how to devote themselves to the other generation, show respect and also observe cultural values. Due to globalization which is closely linked to modernity, it has been from that different populations are communicating in cultures different from theirs. This is because most of the Chinese international students have left there but the place to live and work in different cities which are very far from their home countries. In this case, they come into contact with a completely different culture (Treas & Mazumdar, 2019). The main reason for Chinese international students seeking broader greener pastures in European and American countries is due to money which is an irrational approach. This rational approach has resulted in identity identification which is bearing and predictable rationalism. Globalization shows that there is a division of class factors and new hierarchical systems are being formed around local mobility. It is for this reason that this younger generation of grandchildren finds it very easy to overlap the cultural hierarchical statuses that have been placed in society. This is the reason it may become so easy for them to disconnect from their parents and even bless them on their block list (Mueller & Elder, 2019). Due to this effect, it has become very difficult to predict rationalism. Identity awareness is a challenge to indigenous people because of the prominent individualism that is coming up due to the influence of social media.
In conclusion, even though technology is important to need it comes to communication it has also become a huge barrier where most Chinese international students prefer blocking their parents and even grandparents. The main effect is that social media technology has created a physical barrier between grandparents and their grandchildren. Due to global identity most of the ground children have also adopted a different culture which is appropriate to their country of residence. For that reason, they have lost their cultural identity making it easy for them to avoid the hierarchical structures that are being created in society. Grandparents play a very important role in Chinese culture as they are expected to shape educate and transform their generation into responsible individuals in this society. For that reason, there is always a need for close contact between grandchildren and other grandfathers. This close relationship has been broken due to the rise and adoption of technology.
