Introduction to Laser Hair Removal on Dark Skin

Today laser hair removal surgery or method has become one among the popular methods which help in eradicating unwanted hair on the body. Some benefits of the laser hair removal method include precision, speed, predictability, and no more hair growth. With multiple benefits provided by this cosmetic surgery method, this treatment is also exposed to certain challenges especially while treating Fitzpatrick type V skin. This report will focus on challenges associated with treating type V skin and some among the manipulating parameters which can help in overcoming the challenge. Towards the end, the report will critically get involved in understanding parameters which can help in treating the client accurately. 

Challenges Associated with Treating the Dark Skin

Fitzpatrick type V skin is considered to be dark skin tone or olive skin colour which gets tanned easily and may get rarely burn. Fitzpatrick type V skin is commonly found among Indians, the Middle Eastern population, and African Americans. Nistico et al.,(2018, p. 41) states that laser hair removal is difficult for the type V skin type as the skin is thick and also researchers struggled in getting perfection while treating the dark skin. Pillai (2019, p. 61) states that some of the common challenges for considering laser hair removal on dark skin are that it leads to excessive darkening of the skin, burns, scarring, skin discolouration, and also blotchiness. Laser hair removal is considered to be a challenge for skin type V due to the high density of competing for the chromophore in the epidermis. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is identified to be one of the major challenge associated with skin type V. also, the ideal pulse duration which is used in laser hair removal is greater than 10 ms and less than 100 ms, but the pulse width is 30 ms and more frequently with skin type V further adding challenge to the treatment. 

Manipulating Parameters to Overcome the Challenge

It is understood that 400 ms laser treatment is identified to be safe when treating type V skin. Furthermore, it was understood that continuous-wave lasers like CO2 (10,600 nm) with water as the target chromophore in the epidermis can help to reduce inflammation in the skin type V. a patient with skin type V has fairly 60% of the hair reduction using the influence of 23 J/cm(2) (20-25 J/cm(2)) and a 12-15 mm spot size. Visible wavelength up to 380-780 nm can help in treating the skin type V condition. Bonan, Troiano & Verdelli (2020, p. 6) states that in some exercise conditions, green (520 nm) and blue (470 nm) showed a greater signal as compared to red (630 nm). Eremia et al.,(2001, p. 11) states that the power required for treating the dark skin tone goes up to 20,000 watts and is safe.

Treating and Preventing Client

From the above discussion, it was understood that Wavelengths of 1,064/532 nm were best suited for skin type V and the green light proved to be effective on the dark spots and freckles which were common in the dark skin. A light which short-wavelength posed to be effective on dark skin which helped in removing the melanin from the skin (Pillai 2019, p. 55). Appropriate cooling is extremely important in treating the skin colour and undergoing laser treatment successfully. It was studied that patients with skin type V experienced comfort with epidermal temperatures of –5 degrees to 5 degrees Celcius (Nistico et al.,2018, p. 41). Additionally, ice packs after leaser treatment needed to be highly effective for patients with dark skin.

Conclusion on Laser Hair Removal on Dark Skin

The report was successful in understanding the difficult issues that are faced by patients with skin type V during hair removal surgery. After critically analyzing the problems, the report proposed some corrective parameters that should be considered while treating this skin type and also help to overcome the challenges.
