Leadership styles in nursing can be defined as the capabilities and traits demonstrated by a nurse with respect to the management, duration guidance and motivation of the team they are leading. Depending on their leadership style, a person creates and implements strategies while taking into account the needs of their team and the expectations of stakeholders. There are eight distinct leadership philosophies in nursing.
a) Democratic leadership
This is a very effective and commonly used style of leadership focusing on the active participation of all the members of the team in the decision-making process. Although the democratic nurse leader considers the team's opinions and suggestions, she makes the final choice.
b) Autocratic leadership
This type of leadership emphasises taking control over situations and team members. A distinct demarcation in the roles and responsibilities of team members and leaders can be seen in autocratic leadership. This involves little or no input from subordinates.
c) Transformational leadership
Transformational leaders usually create environments that encourage increased team morale, team satisfaction and higher commitment towards work and the organisation. Indeed, many healthcare firms that use this style of leadership report higher employee satisfaction levels, which have been linked to more effective patient care and better patient outcomes (Specchia et al., 2021).
d) Servant Leadership
Compared to the leader-servant mindset, the servant-leader mindset is very different. Prioritising the needs of their team and the patients they serve is a trait of servant leaders in the nursing profession. The resources, connections, and competencies team members require to do their duties to the best of their ability are provided by servant nurse leaders.
They aspire to the professional and personal success of every team member. The servant nurse leader has the power to make choices and uses that power, but they also value the opinions and ideas of their team members and work to incorporate them as much as possible.
e) Laissez-faire leadership
This is a liberal form of leadership and lets team members make decisions in matters concerning decision-making and problem-solving. Nurse leaders practising this type of leadership style give their team members the resources and tools they need (Alghamdi et al., 2018).
f) Transactional leadership
This is based on the reward-punishment dynamics. This is also known as managerial leadership. It puts a strong emphasis on the significance of organisation, structure, performance, and results.
g) Bureaucratic leadership
It functions on strict adherence to regulations and norms and involves a well-defined chain of command. Leaders following this leadership style use their position in the organisational hierarchy to influence team members.
A type of leadership in nursing known as charismatic leadership is built on a foundation of effective communication, charm, and persuasion. Strong passion and convictions about their profession characterise charismatic nursing leaders.
They are able to persuade others to have the same enthusiasm and convictions because of their powerful charm. Team members are frequently moved to action, devotion, and problem-solving abilities by this kind of nurse leader (GarcíaāSierra & FernándezāCastro, 2018).
