In the experience encountered, the good thing which happened is that the nurse immediately informed us about the patient's condition and this has helped to provide timely treatment. Immediate notification of the patient's condition helps to take immediate action, and this is the preferred option. However, one thing to be learned from this experience is that as a nurse I should be able to interpret clinical deterioration at a much earlier stage, and the emergency button should be pressed at a much earlier stage. This would have helped with better treatment options. As a nurse I was feeling nervous while I was attending to the patient, I should have been more confident.
With the help of initial assessments, it was identified that at the time of arrival. the oxygen level of the patient was lower than the normal range. According to the standard 1.6 provided by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), the nurses should comprehensively conduct an assessment, this will help them detect early signs of the condition and provide them with the treatment accordingly (NMBA, 2023). All the assessments which are conducted should be holistic and also culturally appropriate. The health care worker must work in partnership to determine factors that potentially affect the well-being of patients. Despite the initial assessments, there was a delay in the judgment. After noticing the low oxygen levels in the patient, my reaction was to inform the registered nurse even though the situation was in the MET criteria which should have called for pressing the emergency button. If it would have been informed at an early stage then the interventions would have also been used at an early stage (Ascha et al., 2018). The reaction time was delayed and this affected the treatment process. According to the nursing standard 3.1, nurses should respond timely to the health of the patients (NMBA, 2023). This is an important machine as this will help to measure the oxygen level. Other than this provision of supplemental oxygen should have been provided so any deficit in the oxygen level is taken care of. There are some antioxidant-rich foods present and the consumption of these foods should be increased as this will increase the oxygen level in the body. The patient's breathing pattern should be studied and if there is any alteration then it should be reported immediately (Grensemann et al., 2018).
