The purpose of the present literature review is to assess the correlation that exists between core strength and the development of lower limb stability among cricketers. Core strength is the ability to maintain the position of the trunk. An athlete such as a cricketer requires an appropriate amount of balance, core stability, and neuromuscular control to safely and effectively perform the necessary movements of their sport. Lower limb stability is a direct result of a comprehensive and strong core. For the present literature review, both qualitative and quantitative data have been used followed by the critical evaluation. It can be visualized that core strengthening training amongst the cricketers assists in reducing lower limb injury and enhancing stability.
The core of the body links the upper and the lower body together. It is imperative to have a solid core as it forms the foundation for all the activities and having a strong core is imperative for cricket players as well. The core muscles are the muscles that control and stabilize the spine and pelvis (Better Health, 2021). Core strength is the ability to maintain the position of the trunk. An athlete requires an appropriate amount of balance, core stability, and neuromuscular control to safely and effectively perform the necessary movements of their sport (Bagherian et al., 2019). To attain core stability, exercise is imperative that strengthen the core muscles. Musculoskeletal injuries are common in case of athletes including cricketers and so it becomes furthermore essential to maintain core strength. Core stability has proved to be an essential intrinsic factor that affects the athlete’s tendency to develop an injury. There exists a correlation between enhanced core strength and a lower risk of lower injury in the athletes such as cricketers.
The literature review aims to assess the extent of the relationship that exists between core strength and how it is associated with lowering the risk of lower limb injuries and enhanced stability in the case of cricketers
The establishment of literature reviews requires the usage of the research question. It is essential to develop a research topic that can help gather the data required for the literature review. The research question gives an idea concerning what the study aims at achieving and what is the basic idea or goal of the current research. Therefore the research questions can be:
To what extent enhanced core strength is associated with sustainable lower limb stability in cricketers?
The literature review is one of the types of research methodology that will be done for this topic. This kind of research aims to critically evaluate the literature so that the formulated research question can be answered effectively and accurately. It is a method for conducting a methodical and transparent review of the literature that identifies, selects, and evaluates all pertinent research studies (Leite et al., 2019). The status of knowledge about a specific topic is extensively described methodically. A literature review is a type of review that is based on grasping and collecting the maximum amount of information available on a particular topic.
It is viewed as one of the most standardized and sturdy methods to provide accurate data concerning a particular topic.
Characterizing inclusion and exclusion criteria is imperative when carrying out research procedures and is an essential process to evaluate the validity of the study. It is possible to establish an inclusion and exclusion basis to ensure that only pertinent items are pulled from databases. The primary characteristics of the target sample that are exploited by the researchers of the study to meet the purpose of the research are referred to as inclusion criteria (Patino & Ferreira, 2018). Exclusion criteria are characteristics of potential research participants who meet the inclusion conditions but have extra traits that could hinder the study's success or raise the likelihood of a negative outcome. The inclusion criteria include only those articles that are published from 2017 to 2023. Preferred language can also be a kind of inclusion criterion. For example for the scope of the current study English language is preferred. The exclusion criteria can consist of papers published before the year 2017, along with the studies that have been published in languages other than English for the present study. Databases like PubMed, CINHAL, and Google Scholar are some examples of databases that have been employed.
Boolean expressions are employed to search the desired query. In other words, the operators AND, OR, and NOT are used to combine phrases. Each document is merely a collection of words in the model's eyes (Aliyu, 2017). The Boolean operator comes in three different varieties. And, or, and not are the three. Because they broaden the search whereas the third operator, NOT, narrows it, the AND and OR operators would be used for the search.
The study conducted by Gharote et al., (2017) tries to comprehend the core stability that exists among diverse sportsmen including cricketers, and to utilize this information to develop a sport conditioning program. For the study, eighty participants were taken twenty each belonging to four different sports and were made to perform a core endurance test. It was visualized that trunk muscles had an imperative role in maintaining stability and a stable core provides the foundation for torques generated by the limbs. It can be visualized how imperative it is to have core musculature.
The prospective study conducted by Chaurasiya & Mehta, (2018) aims at assessing the effect of core stability exercise on enhancing the strength of the upper and lower body in women cricketers. For the study, fifty women cricketers were taken as the sample population and were given 8 – week long Swiss ball core stability training. Descriptive statistics and analysis of covariance were used to carry out the data analysis. It was visualized after the analysis that cores stability-building training programs assist in developing lower body strengths in female cricketers.
Research carried out by Joseph et al., (2021) aims at measuring the relationship between core stability training programs in the development of endurance in cricketers and to minimize the load on joints. To test this total of forty male cricketers were taken as the sample size and were characterized into Group A and Group B. One group attains the training program and the other group does not. Sorensen back endurance test and star excursion balance test were used to assess the core endurance. Descriptive and inferential statistical tools were employed for analysis. It was visualized that the training program has caused an increase in core endurance and enhanced core stability is associated with improved trunk and hip strength and causes the development of torques in lower limbs.
Panchal et al., (2022) researched to examine the efficiency of pilates on the diverse physical well-being of cricketers including the lower limb. Core stability assists in maintaining posture and aids in limb movements by strengthening the trunk and assisting in reducing limb injury. For the study, thirty-nine cricketers were used as the sample population of which nineteen were in the control group and twenty participants were subjected to pilates training for the tenure of six weeks. There was a significant increase in the core stability and strength post the training program. The result of the study showed that pilates training proves to be an effective intervention in attaining core strength and causing an enhancement in the performance of the cricketers.
After analyzing the qualitative and the quantitative data elaborated in the literature it can be visualized that most of the training programs were of 8 –weeks long. Core stability, endurance, and development of strength are the abilities essential for having trunk stability which is a prerequisite in a profession such as a cricket. In most of the studies test that focuses on the development of endurance was the major focus (Hung et al., 2019). Generally for each weak, the exercises are planned to focus on the development of force generation (weeks 1-3), stabilization (weeks 4-6), and functional strengthening (weeks 7-8). All this is essential for cricketers as these can cause the stability of the lower limb which causes a reduction in the incidences of limb injury. This training aids in the development of strength in the cricketers which aids them to sustain for longer duration on the field.
Core stability is imperative as it assists in controlling the position and motion of the trunk and leg that assists to allow adequate force production. The core muscles play an imperative role in maintaining and stabilizing the spine and assist in the transmission of force from the upper body to the lower (Kataria et al., 2018). Strong core muscles reduce the stress on lower limbs which causes a decline in injuries and enhances overall performance. Additionally, they also assist in maintaining balance and posture which are extremely crucial for cricketers during movements. Exercises such as planks and bird dogs can cause enhancement in the core stability of cricketers.
Human performance science practitioners or researchers should work in this area and try to incorporate behaviors and exercises that promote the development of core-building exercises. Exercises such as planks, side planks, wood choppers, and rotations in lung positions are some vital exercises that assist in building a strong core (Sports & Spinal Physiotherapy, 2022). The practitioners should be up to date with the latest evidence and scientific knowledge regarding the core building and effectiveness of such interventions in improving the performance of the cricketers and reducing the incidences of injury.
The employment of core strength training is essential in developing the stability of the athletes. It affects the physical components of the body of the cricketer including enhanced lower limb stability. Core strength exercises are imperative to have a definite musculature that assists in having an appropriate posture. After the analysis of the literature, it is evident that core stability-building exercises aid in enhancement of the limb movement in cricketers and assist them to perform better. Hence more comprehensive work needs to be carried out in the field and more substantial efforts need to be done to add core strength development exercise in training.
